N-type TOPCon panels: the new generation replacing PERC

TOPCon is the tech leaving PERC behind in 2026. More efficient, lower degradation, better in heat. Here's what changes and whether the premium pays.

Buying panels in 2026 and seeing 'TOPCon' or 'N-type' on the datasheet? That's the new generation. PERC ruled the past decade (2015-2024). TOPCon is replacing it. Here's what it means.

P-type vs N-type

Silicon can be doped with boron (P-type) or phosphorus (N-type). PERC uses P; TOPCon uses N. N-type has fewer LID (Light-Induced Degradation) defects, so the panel loses less efficiency over time.

Real efficiency

PERC: 20-22% in commercial panel. TOPCon: 22-23.5%. Lab record TOPCon: 26.6%. The gap looks small but compounds to 8-10% more total energy over 25 years.

Temperature coefficient

TOPCon loses -0.30%/°C vs -0.35%/°C for PERC. In hot summer (140 °F panel temp), TOPCon keeps 5% more power. Relevant in Texas, Spain south, Australia.

Better warranty

PERC: 80% at 25 years. TOPCon: 87-89% at 30 years. Brands like Jinko Tiger Neo, JA Solar Deep Blue 4.0, Trina Vertex N offer 1% year-1 degradation then 0.4%/year.

Current price premium

In Jan 2026, TOPCon runs 5-10% over equivalent PERC. Gap shrinks each quarter. Parity expected late 2026. Buying today for 25+ years: pay the premium.

Brands already shipping TOPCon

Jinko Tiger Neo (world TOPCon leader). JA Solar Deep Blue 4.0. Trina Vertex N. Longi Hi-MO 7. Canadian Solar HiHero. Risen Energy Hyper-ion. By 2026 every Tier 1 ships TOPCon.

Compare with mono vs poly and are bifacial worth it.
