Side-by-side fridge on solar panels: why it's demanding

A side-by-side uses double a regular fridge: 600-900 kWh/year. With ice and water dispensers, up to 1200 kWh. How to size panels and not regret it.

The side-by-side / French door fridge is the kitchen power king. Bigger compressor, more wall area to insulate, electric ice dispenser, sometimes chilled water. Total: 600-1200 kWh/year.

Consumption by feature

Compressor: 150-250 W (cycles 30-40% of time). Auto ice maker: 80-120 kWh/year extra. Filtered chilled water: 30 kWh/year. LED lighting: 5 W. Digital display: 8 W constant.

How many panels

1000 kWh/year = 2.7 kWh/day. 2-3 panels of 410 W cover energetically. Being 24/7, you need battery for night: 5 kWh usable covers no-sun hours.

Side-by-side traps

1) Inverter compressor doesn't need a soft starter. Old compressors do. 2) Some pre-2015 models have constant anti-condensation heaters (50 W) — invisible draw. 3) Touchscreen models pull 12-15 W just for the screen.

Efficient 2026 models

Samsung Family Hub Eco: 320 kWh/year. LG InstaView Door-in-Door: 380 kWh/year. Bosch EcoSmart: 400 kWh/year. Vs old models (700-900 kWh), a new one pays for itself in 5 years.

Worth it off-grid?

Pure off-grid: NO. A side-by-side triples the batteries needed. Better an Energy Star top-mount + separate chest freezer if you need space. For grid-tied self-consumption: no issue.

Compare with standard fridge on solar.
