Hybrid inverter: what it is, how it works and when you need one
A hybrid inverter combines solar, battery and grid in one box. It's the 2026 self-consumption standard, but not for everyone.
Ten years ago a solar install had 3 boxes: charge controller, solar inverter, battery charger. Today a hybrid bundles them all plus smart management. If you're installing new in 2026, hybrid is the call.
What it does exactly
1) Converts solar DC to AC for the house. 2) Charges the battery with solar surplus. 3) Discharges battery when sun's down. 4) Connects to grid to sell exports or charge battery off-peak. All in one box with one brain.
On-grid hybrid vs off-grid hybrid
On-grid: needs grid to start. Disconnects on outage (anti-islanding). Pure off-grid: runs gridless. Island/grid hybrid: best of both — grid-tied for optimization, gridless mode keeps the house alive on battery during outage.
When it pays
If you plan battery now or within 5 years, yes. If you only want grid-tied self-consumption and export, a regular solar inverter is 30% cheaper. If you have frequent outages, hybrid with backup is mandatory.
Leading brands
Victron MultiPlus II and EasySolar: technical benchmark. Sol-Ark / Sol-Ark 15K (USA): very popular. Growatt SPH/SPF: value. Sungrow SH: solid. Tesla Powerwall+ (integrated): premium. Enphase IQ8 Series with battery: AC-coupled.
Hidden limitations
1) Pricier electronics → more failure surface. 2) If the main board dies, all 3 functions die (solar, battery, grid). 3) Battery compatibility is closed: each inverter brand only works with select batteries from its ecosystem.
What if I already have a grid-tied install?
Three paths: replace the inverter with a hybrid (clean but pricey), add AC-coupled battery (Enphase IQ Battery, Tesla Powerwall), or add a hybrid in parallel. Get an installer to model your case before deciding.
