Real solar panel payback in a home: step-by-step calculation
The installer says '5 year payback'. Reality: 7-10 years with all numbers honestly in hand. How to calculate yours.
Calculating panel payback seems simple: total cost ÷ annual savings. But 8 variables almost nobody includes. The honest calculation, without sales tricks.
Data you need
1) Total install cost (incl. tax, installer, paperwork). 2) Real incentives received (not promised). 3) Estimated annual kWh production. 4) % direct self-consumption vs % grid export. 5) Grid kWh price. 6) Export kWh price. 7) Annual maintenance. 8) Annual degradation.
Realistic US 2026 example
6 kWp + inverter cost: $19,000. Federal ITC + state: -$6,500. Net cost: $12,500. Production: 9,000 kWh/year. Self-consumption 60%: 5,400 kWh × $0.18/kWh = $972. Export 3,600 kWh × $0.06 = $216. Total saving/year: $1,188.
Simple payback
$12,500 ÷ $1,188/year = 10.5 years. But this is the installer's optimistic version. Need to subtract maintenance, account for degradation, and apply NPV.
Payback with real costs
Annual maintenance: $120 (cleaning, inspection). Degradation: 0.5%/year. Net Present Value (3% discount): future savings worth less. NPV calc: real payback 11-13 years. Slightly worse than the simple version.
Variables that speed up or slow down
Speed up: rising grid prices (likely), battery for more self-consumption, summer AC. Slow down: rising export kWh price (unlikely), tariff plan downgrades, LED bulbs cutting consumption (paradox!).
EU comparison
Spain typical: 6 kWp installed €11,000. Tax credit 30-40% = -€4,000. Net cost: €7,000. Production 9,000 kWh × €0.30 (grid) = €2,700/year. Net metering credit. Payback: 5-6 years. Higher tariffs than USA, faster payback.
When it NEVER pays back
Home consuming <1500 kWh/year (minimum apartment). North-facing roof. Permanent shading. Zone with sun hours <2.5 (northern UK). Selling home in <3 years. Cases where solar is emotional, not economic.
