Tesla Powerwall history: from Powerwall 1 (2015) to Powerwall 3 (2024)

Powerwall was the first mass-marketed home battery. How Tesla created the market and how it evolved in 9 years.

Before the Tesla Powerwall (2015), home batteries were DIY car-battery rigs or ugly industrial systems. Tesla changed everything with a beautiful, integrated, understandable product. Has changed 3 times since.

Powerwall 1 (May 2015)

Live unveiling by Elon Musk in California. 6.4 kWh usable, 3.3 kW continuous, NMC chemistry. Designed to recycle retired Model S batteries. Cost: $3000 + install. Sold 2500 units in 6 hours. Demand impossible to meet.

Powerwall 2 (October 2016)

13.5 kWh usable, 5 kW continuous, NMC. Integrated inverter (no external for AC). Sleeker design. Cost: $5500. Production in Nevada Gigafactory. By 2024 sold 500000+ units worldwide.

Powerwall+ (2021)

Same Powerwall 2 with integrated 7.6 kW solar MPPT. Aimed at new installs: Powerwall+ is battery + solar inverter all in one. No separate solar inverter needed.

Powerwall 3 (May 2024)

Generational leap: 13.5 kWh usable, 11.5 kW continuous peak, LiFePO4 chemistry (safer, longer life). 11.5 kW integrated inverter. 6 MPPT inputs. Full automatic backup. Price: $9500 + install.

NMC → LFP switch: why

NMC has higher density but fire risk. LFP is more stable, lasts more cycles (4000+ vs 2000), but heavier. In stationary battery, weight doesn't matter. Tesla followed Sungrow, BYD and Pylontech that had LFP since 2019.

Current market share

Tesla Powerwall has ~30% of the global home battery market. Competes with BYD, Pylontech, Enphase and LG. Brand and Tesla EV integration remain its biggest edge, not price (not the cheapest).
