Solar technology 2026: the 5 breakthroughs reshaping the industry

The solar industry has been cutting costs at a double-digit annual rate for a decade. In 2026 we're no longer just talking about cheaper panels: we're talking about more efficient, more versatile, more integrable ones. Here are five breakthroughs every consumer or installer should know about this year.
1. Perovskite cells: twice the efficiency, half the cost
Perovskite is a crystalline material that's breaking records. Combined with traditional silicon in a tandem cell, it's already reached 33.9% lab efficiency (vs. 22-23% in a conventional monocrystalline panel). Oxford PV started selling the first commercial tandem panels in 2025, and by the end of 2026 prices are expected to drop another 30%.
2. Bifacial panels with solar tracking
Bifacial panels generate electricity on both sides by harvesting reflected ground light. Combined with solar tracking structures, output rises 15-25%. For residential self-consumption the extra cost rarely pays off, but in utility-scale plants it's now standard.
3. Agrivoltaics: panels that share land with crops
Agrivoltaics installs raised panels above farmland, generating electricity without sacrificing the harvest. There are projects with tomatoes, lettuce and olive groves keeping agricultural output at 80-100% while producing energy.
4. Cheaper LiFePO4 batteries every year
Lithium-iron-phosphate battery prices fell 40% between 2023 and 2025. A quality 5 kWh battery costs around $1,300 today (vs. $2,700 in 2022). This radically changes the math of storage-based self-consumption.
- More cycles: 6,000+ vs. 3,000 just 3 years ago.
- Greater usable depth of discharge: 90% vs. 80%.
- Lower fire risk than NMC cells.
5. Microinverters and per-panel optimisers
Instead of a single central inverter, microinverters convert DC to AC at each panel. If one panel is shaded, it doesn't drag the rest down. For roofs with mixed orientations or partial shading the gain is 8-15% annual production.
