Does your home insurance cover solar panels? What you must know
Hail, theft, lightning, faulty install: who pays? How to declare panels on insurance and avoid claim rejections.
Install solar panels. Does home insurance cover them if they fall, get stolen, or hail breaks them? Spoiler: depends, and most discover NO when something happens.
Default coverage
Basic policies usually cover 'fixed dwelling elements' up to a value. Panels fixed to roof fit. BUT: many insurers explicitly exclude or cap them. Read fine print.
Typical risks
1) Hail: top cause of panel damage (10% annual probability in mountain zones). 2) Lightning (induced surge). 3) Hurricane wind (panel blown off). 4) Theft (remote areas, resale value). 5) Faulty install (collapse). 6) Vandalism.
Notify insurer: mandatory
On install, notify insurer in writing with: invoice, warranty, install certificate. If you don't, in claim they can allege 'undeclared risk' and reject payment. Cost of not notifying: 100% of damage.
Solar-specific rider
Many insurers offer 'Renewable Energy' module adding $30-50/year and covering 100% of panels, batteries, inverter, microinverters and wiring. Recommended if install exceeds $6,000.
Specialized insurers
USA: SolarInsure, GreenAmerica Insurance, Liberty Mutual Solar. EU: Generali EnergÃa, Allianz Solar. Cover panels + business interruption (energy not produced during repair). Cost: $60-250/year extra.
Typical exclusions
1) Normal maintenance (cleaning, adjustment). 2) Loss of manufacturer warranty. 3) Rodent damage (some policies). 4) Damage from incorrect install (responsible: installer). 5) Business interruption in basic policies.
Compare with panels in rain and snow.
